fan-DOM - The group of activities
around a particular interest and, more importantly, the group of
fans carrying out the activities, such as watching their preferred
movie or show, joining a mailing list, visiting websites, talking
with other fans in a chatroom, reading fic, going to cons, being
completely obsessed. The term fandom is also used more rarely to
refer to all the fans of every movie and TV show as one big uber
group.
Star Trek
Yes, I was a Trek-head. I never really liked the original
series (Kirk was a tool), but The Next Generation was always
my favorite. Deep Space Nine became too much of a space opera
in the latter seasons, but I stuck around to the very bitter end.
Voyager was... tragic, but there were rare gems and no matter
what anyone else says, 7 of 9 was an asset. I refuse to watch the
current ridiculousness that is Enterprise.
Xena: Warrior
Princess
One of my first fandoms. I joined chatrooms, mailing lists, listservs,
and made lots of friends. I still talk to Phil often. I stopped
watching the show after about the 4th season, but the fun was still
there.
Buffy the Vampire
Slayer
This was fandom to the extreme. I started watching the show in 1997
and in 1998, I finally got the hang of the internet (after some
experimenting) and made a simple webpage. I frequented the Bronze
posting board back when it was still fun and Joss and other actors,
writers, and crew would stop by and chat. I'm still vaguely involved
in this fandom and have rediscovered some "famous" people
now populating other areas (Saff, Av, Darcy, and Soul', to name
a few).
X-Men
I've followed the comics on and off since the late 90's, but didn't
get fully involved until the movie came out in 2000. I stumbled
upon some Wolverine/Rogue fanfiction and was immediately sucked
in to the list and the websites. I found some fabulous people and
even my brain-twin (*mwah!*). Now I'm back into the comics and following
the 5 or so spin-off titles.
Lord of the
Rings
Hm. I have never read any of the books - though I'm working on correcting
this - but the movie was fantastic! Friends from the WR and Buffy
fandom have been slowly converting me over, including LOTR_RPS,
slash, and hi-parody. I'm currently trying to teach myself Quenya
and Tiw.
Alias
Tuned in on a whim and was immediately impressed with the writing
- a great action series featuring characters with depth. Every episode
of this sharp series ends with a cliffhanger that leaves you screaming
for more. Hard to believe that something this inventive and fantastic
came out of ABC. I'm a die-hard Sydney/Vaughn 'shipper and am slowly
getting sucked into the fandom. I will agree that Syd needs to get
caught more often, a la Nikita.
