JC real vs fake

Everyone wants a good deal. When I saw that I could buy a $90 designer perfume at half the price, I got suckered in. I should have known better; the signs were all there. But the price was too good to be true at $37.99, so I ignored the fact that the eBay seller was new. However, I did wait to read her initial reviews and the 3 that came in for her recent sales of perfume were positive. None were negative or said her items were fake. So either people are unwittingly buying fake perfume or they know these are knock-offs and don’t care.

There are quite a few articles written about how to spot fake and counterfeit perfumes, but I’m going to focus on the perfume I bought since I actually have pictures of my expensive lesson, which is Juicy Couture’s Juicy Couture.

The moment I received the package I had a suspicion that this item was fake. When I removed the perfume box from the envelope, it was sealed and wrapped in cellophane wrap. But I noticed there was a pencil mark on the box inside the sealed cellophane wrap.

When I went to open the cellophane wrap, the top popped open really easily as if it was not glued on at all. I opened the box to find that the cardboard cutout that is supposed to hold the gem cap in place was torn, which might have occurred because the gem top had come loose from the cap either before or during shipping.

I pulled the bottle out of the box and my suspicions continued to mount when I saw that the terrier crest was bent on the top. I also noticed that the glue was done very poorly. The glue was oozing around the edges of the crest and when you look on the back you can see glue strings.

Aside from the broken cap and the poorly glued on crest, at first glance, the bottle looks to be the same shape as the original and the brown necklace with “J” gemstone and white crown is wrapped around the neck of the bottle cap like the real bottle.

This was when I noticed the bottle was not full and the color of the liquid did not look right. I have a small roll-on of the perfume that I received as a gift, and when compared to the counterfeit, the counterfeit liquid was a peach-pinkish color while the real was a golden yellow color.

As for the scent, the scent was similar, but the fake didn’t last long and had a different “after scent”. The after scent from the roll-on was sweet smelling, while the counterfeit smelled like too much alcohol and cheap perfume.

With my suspicions, I went straight to Sephora and purchased a bottle of the perfume at full price to make a comparison. Just at first glance, there are already quite a few discrepancies. Since there are quite a few discrepancies, I am just going to list everything in bullets.

R = Real/Authentic perfume
F = Fake/Counterfeit perfume
In pictures, the Real is on the left and the Fake is on the right.

As you can see from my list, you don’t have to be a perfume connoisseur to see there are quite a few things you can spot to see if the perfume you got is counterfeited or not. I am most definitely not a perfume connoisseur. The last perfume bottle I purchased was from Bath and Body Works and their eau de Toilette are only $30.

Since I discovered the counterfeit early on and purchased this through eBay using Paypal, after I sent a message to the seller as a courtesy and waited 24 hours for her to respond, I immediately went through Paypal, went to the transaction, and clicked the “Click here to resolve” link to open a case on eBay through eBay’s buyer protection program.

eBay’s Buyer Protection program basically has three steps. When you open a case with eBay, they will ask you to try to contact the seller one more time and you can leave a detail account of what transpired. Then eBay will tell you to give the seller 7 days to contact you. By the 7th day, if the seller has not contacted you or if the dispute hasn’t been settled, you can “escalate” the case and eBay will resolve the issue.

After escalating my case, eBay said they would get back to me in 72 hours. In about 2 hours, I saw that ebay had refunded me the full cost of $37.99 that I paid back to my credit card. Though I think my case was pretty solid since by the time I escalated the case, the user (Majoriemoney1) had “not a registered user” next to her name, and the address that I found connected to her paypal account, when put into google maps it didn’t exist, and it kept taking me to the Arizona State Hospital aka Arizona State Asylum. (I’m sure there is a joke in there somewhere.)

Even though if the fake smells “close enough” to the real perfume, I don’t recommend using these knock-off perfumes, you don’t know what chemicals these counterfeiters use since there is no quality control. From articles I’ve found online about perfume counterfeiter there have been cases of urine and antifreeze found in the counterfeit perfumes.

I know it sounds cliche, but if you think the price is too good to be true it probably is. So go with your gut and immediately report these counterfeiters if you decide to chance it. Though I recommend just waiting for a 20% off sale and buy your favorite perfume from an authorized retailer or something. It is also good to know that eBay’s Buyer Protection works, just make sure to make your reports within 30-45 days.

Superhero indoor

1. Indoors

Superhero outdoor   Superhero under sun

                    2. Outdoor under shade.       3. Outdoor under sun.

Del Sol’s Superhero is a metallic baby blue color polish that turns into a metallic purple color. The blue in Superhero is quite similar to the blue color in Electrik, which instead turns metallic green under the sun. However, I think the blue color does look like a “superhero” blue.

The polish is very sheer, and I had to place at least three coats of the polish to get it opaque. I like the color, but unfortunately the metallic polish also streaks.

This manicure consist of three coats of Superhero and one coat of Orly’s polishield. Even with the polishield, the manicure only lasted three days before cracking, and it started to chip after the fifth day.

Even though Del Sol’s polishes aren’t very durable, but if you just want to have fun colors on your nails for a few days, you can’t go wrong with color changing polish.

December’s Birchbox is all decorated for the holidays!

birchbox dec 2012 - 01 birchbox dec 2012 - 02

Inside this months box was a selection of nice samples and a chocolate treat!

birchbox dec 2012 - 02 birchbox dec 2012 - 03 birchbox dec 2012 - 04

First, I really loved the chocolate fortune cookie from Emily’s Chocolates! I’m usually not a fan of fortune cookies, but this one was so tasty! They’re $5.99 for 6 cookies, so I’m not buying any right now, but it’s a good thing to keep in mind for gifts or a splurge.

I’ve purchased the J.R. Watkins Hand & Cuticle Salve for myself before, but that was several years ago. It was a larger tin and it got kind of gross before I could use it all. I did like the product a lot though, and thought it was great for extra dry spots along my nails. I love the sample size and have already used it several times. The aloe and green tea scent it very fresh without being overpowering.

The Nick Chavez Volumizing Shampoo is okay, but I didn’t notice any difference in the volume of my hair. It cleans well enough, so I’ll keep using it until I use up the sample.

My favorite thing in this month’s box has to be theBalm’s Hot Mama blush! It’s a peach blush with a slight gold shimmer – kind of like Nars Orgasm or the Milani mineral blush I’ve been using. I feel like this is a bit more pigmented and looks nicer with my skin, though, so I probably be buying a full size at some point. Here’s a closer look at the sample and a swatch in direct and indirect sunlight.

The one item I haven’t tried yet is the Frownies eye gels. The sample is one set that can be reused 2 to 4 times if you can keep them hydrated. I very rarely use eye gels, so I’m not sure when I’ll get to these.

Overall this was a great box and I’ve enjoyed nearly all of the items!

Birchbox is a monthly subscription service. For $10 a month, you’ll receive a box of four to five deluxe sized samples in the mail.

birchbox man - dec 2012 -01

December’s Birchbox Man is all about getting cleaned up and going home for the holidays.

In this box, there were a nice selection of cleansing and moisturizing items:

birchbox man - dec 2012 - 02 birchbox man - dec 2012 - 03 birchbox man - dec 2012 - 04

It’s an interesting selection of stuff and some things I will try (the Lucky tiger items) and some I will probably give away (shave oil, body hydrator). I might think about the tie, but it’s really not my style, so I might end up passing that along too.

My January Birchbox Man is actually already here, so I’ll be posting the contents of that one soon!

On the first day I started school in the United States, my kindergarten teacher completely fascinated me. The story goes that upon seeing her vivid green eyes, either my twin sister or I whispered to my parents: “Teacher looks like a cat.” I’ve been drawn to the color green since then and so when the GEO Magic Color Lens (3-tone green) went on sale at Yes Style in September, I quickly snapped some up. I think I sought out the 3-tone lens specifically because the lens could be purchased to fit my contact lens prescription.

A bit of background according to Wiki: Circle contact lenses originated in South Korea and they are a cosmetic contact lens that makes the eye’s iris appear larger. Instead of like traditional contact lens, circle lenses have areas that are tinted so they can modify the look of the eye, whether that’s making the iris appear bigger (doll like / anime), or to have a crazy shape (cat eye or stars or spider webs), or to change the color AND making the iris appear larger (gray, yellow, red). Now, it’s a VERY good idea to have your eyes checked out by a professional before you stick a piece of plastic into your eye that will suck out oxygen from your cornea. Particularly if you enjoy this thing called vision and seeing as I do but take so much for granted!

Onto the review!

I’m still a fan of Fyrinnae‘s Lip Lustres, though I personally find them more a special occasion lip product than for every day. Two colors I purchased recently for costuming purposes are Pierced (gunmetal) and Type A (garnet red).

Here is Pierced:

Here’s Type A:

fyrinnae type a 01fyrinnae type a 02fyrinnae type a 03

Lip Lustres are a non-sticky, moisturizing lip color made from natural oils and pigments. Because of the mix of natural oils used, this formula will be thinner when warm and more solid when cold. Most of the colors are opaque and while not meant to be long wearing, I find they do tend to last a bit longer than a typical gloss. They have a slight vanilla scent and once set, there is very minimal transfer.

They can be purchased from Fyrinnae for $7 per tube. There are also sample sizes for $2 each.

I’m always trying to find a lip color that doesn’t dry out my lips, but is also long lasting. When Revlon released their Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains, I thought they looked a lot like Tarte’s LipSurgence lip tints, but at a much lower price.

revlon balm stain - rendezvous 01

The first one I decided to buy is a coral orange color called Rendezvous. It was a great color for summer, which is about the time I had purchased this.

The large pencil is a twist-up design with a cap that sits securely so I wouldn’t worry about it coming off in my bag.

revlon balm stain - rendezvous 02revlon balm stain - rendezvous 03

You can see in the swatch above that this color leans more towards orange. It is very pigmented with one swipe, but you can apply it with a lighter hand or layer it for a bolder look. Below are some lip swatches in direct and indirect sunlight.

revlon balm stain - rendezvous 04revlon balm stain - rendezvous 05

The wear time on these is pretty good. Without eating and drinking, I can get 6 to 8 hours, but towards the end of that time, there is a bit of fading. If I eat or drink, I tend to reapply the balm for addition color. It will settle in any rough areas on your lips, so it’s better to exfoliate before applying.

Overall, I’m quite pleased with this balm stain. The price is very reasonable – you can find them for $8-10 depending on the store, but if there is a sale or a coupon can end up paying less.

When I was younger, I absolutely hated the smell of vanilla soaps and perfumes – which was weird because I loved french vanilla ice cream. I didn’t realize it at the time, but what I actually disliked was the synthetic chemical smell of so many vanilla fragrances.

Several months ago, I decided to go hunting for a nice vanilla fragrance. I already own Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Snake Oil, but I wanted something a bit more pure. During my search, I stopped at Body Shop and discovered they had two vanilla fragrances.

The vanilla body mist is exactly what I was  looking for. It has a really lovely vanilla scent and the fragrance lasts most of the day, more if I spray it in my hair. My bottle is plastic and kind of plain, but the new bottle is glass with a very pretty label.

I also decided to get the vanilla perfume oil. It isn’t great for your hair to be spray it with perfumes because of the alcohol content in them, so I often put a drop in my palm and mix it with the macadamia oil I use to moisturize my hair. The scent will basically last until I wash my hair.

You can purchase the vanilla body mist at Body Shop for $12, but it looks like the vanilla perfume oil isn’t carried any more. You can keep checking back for that, though, as sometimes they rotate their items.

This past spring, I was struggling with a lot of blemishes on my skin. I’m not sure if it was hormones or because I was trying out various BB creams, but I was having constant breakouts on my forehead and chin.

Now, I’ve always used100% tea tree oil to treatment but for some reason it wasn’t working and that was getting frustrating. I remembered that from a recent Body Shop haul, I’d picked up a bottle of their tea tree oil. It wasn’t pure and contained a blend of other ingredients. The reviews for it were great online, so I thought I’d finally open it up and try it.

The ingredients for their tea tree oil is listed as:

Water, Alcohol Denat., PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Polysorbate 20, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Limonene, t-Butyl Alcohol, Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil, Citral, Leptospermum Petersonii (Lemon Tea Tree) Oil, Denatonium Benzoate, Tocopherol.

As you can see, there are quite a few other ingredients aside from tea tree oil (Melaleuca Alternifola), and I couldn’t quite believe that it work any better. Well, I was wrong! This stuff works amazing on blemishes. Applying it directly once or twice a day, depending on how bad the blemish is, will clear up the spot in a few days. Previously, it would take weeks for the blemish to start to heal and I’d still be left with a spot of dark discoloration.

Now I tend to apply this tea tree oil when I feel a blemish beginning and nearly every time, it will keep the pimple from developing. I love this stuff and always make sure I have ti with me when I travel.

The bottle costs $9.00 for a 0.33 fl oz bottle, but you can usually get it for less during one of the Body Shop‘s frequent sales.

I got this little sample bottle of Zoya‘s Bevin in a Birchbox. This color was part of Zoya’s True Spring collection.

Bevin is a dusty sage green that is opaque with two coats. With base coat and top coat, I was able to get a little more than a week of wear before I removed it. There was some edge-wear, not no chipping.

I’ve  already purchased a full sized bottle of this color and have passed the sample bottle along for a friend to try.

Zoya nail polish is 5 free, containing no formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, camphor, or dibutyl phthalate. The polishes cost $8 each, but Zoya has occasional sales.
